What is MetaMask?
MetaMask is a browser extension wallet that brings Ethereum and EVM-compatible chains to your Chrome browser. It allows you to manage accounts, store tokens and NFTs, and connect securely to decentralized applications (dApps).
1 • Install MetaMask for Chrome
- Open Chrome and visit the official website: metamask.io.
- Click Download and choose Chrome. You will be taken to the Chrome Web Store listing.
- Click Add to Chrome then confirm Add extension. The MetaMask fox icon will appear in the toolbar.
Tip: Only install MetaMask from metamask.io or the official Chrome Web Store page. Avoid third-party links and clones.
2 • Create or Import a Wallet
- Click the MetaMask icon in your toolbar and choose Get Started.
- Select Create a Wallet (new) or Import wallet (if you already have a seed phrase).
- Create a strong password for this extension (local encryption for your device).
- Write down the 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase and store it offline in a secure place — never screenshot or copy it to cloud storage.
- Confirm the phrase when prompted to finish setup.
Security note: MetaMask or any service will never ask you to share your Secret Recovery Phrase. If someone asks for it, it is a scam.
3 • Add Networks & Tokens
MetaMask shows Ethereum Mainnet by default. To use other networks (e.g., Polygon, BSC, Avalanche) or custom tokens:
- Add a network: Click network dropdown → Add network and enter RPC details from a trusted source.
- Add tokens: Assets → Add token → search or paste the token contract address (verify on a block explorer).
4 • Connecting to dApps
- Open the dApp (marketplace, game or DeFi app) and click Connect Wallet.
- Select MetaMask. Review the connection request carefully and approve only if you trust the site.
- Disconnect websites you no longer use from Settings → Connected sites.
Safety Tips — Protect Your Crypto
- Never share your Secret Recovery Phrase. Keep physical backups (paper/steel) offline.
- Use a hardware wallet (Ledger/Trezor) for significant balances and connect it via MetaMask.
- Use a dedicated browser profile for MetaMask and minimize other extensions to reduce risk.
- Verify contracts and URLs before approving transactions; check on Etherscan or the project's official site.
- Revoke approvals periodically using tools like revoke.cash.
- Keep software updated: Chrome, MetaMask, and your OS should be current.
Troubleshooting
- Extension not opening: Restart Chrome and ensure MetaMask is enabled at chrome://extensions.
- Missing tokens: Add the token contract manually under Assets → Add Token.
- Network mismatch: Check you’re on the correct network (Mainnet vs testnet).
- Suspicious activity: Remove suspicious extensions, run a malware scan, and move funds to a fresh wallet (with new seed) if necessary.
FAQ
- Q: Can MetaMask recover my wallet without the seed phrase?
- A: No — the Secret Recovery Phrase is required to restore accounts. Back it up safely.
- Q: Is MetaMask custodial?
- A: No — MetaMask is non-custodial. You control your private keys (seed phrase).
- Q: How do I make MetaMask safer?
- A: Use hardware wallets for high-value assets, disable unnecessary extensions, and follow the tips above.
